Routine Our Way to Health and Happiness

There’s a lot to be said for a solid routine.

Some may see the word routine and think ‘boring’ or ‘mundane’, instantly rejecting the idea, thinking it automatically equates to a lack of spontaneity in your life.

But what if I told you maintaining a good routine in your life may give you more time to do the things you’d prefer to be doing.

With the busyness of our lives seeming to run the show these days, it is important every now and then that we do a spot check on our overall wellness. Are we happy, at least most of the time? Are we getting enough sleep, healthy food, exercise, time for our relationships, intimacy, relaxation, and general fun?

If you’re hyperventilating right now, listen up!

To make time, sometimes we need to put aside a little time alone to think, and if you have a partner, agree to jointly consider what you could do individually and in partnership to create a more workable life, particularly if you also have children. If you do have kids, involve them too so you can allocate tasks to everyone. Your family is your team and everyone is a team player – no exceptions.

Here are some of the reasons why a good routine can inspire more health and happiness in your life:

  • It helps keep you centred, less anxiety driven. You know what is required, you know the steps to take

  • It helps you to prioritise, and to realise what is important and what can be let go of

  • It helps you to consider and create healthy boundaries where required

  • It frees your mind, as you automatically know what is required of you

  • You can prioritise your general health and wellbeing, allocating time for exercise, relaxation, healthy meal preparation, date nights etc

  • It helps you get more generally organised as time is allotted for everything you need/want to achieve

  • The whole family can be involved, helping to create a sense of responsibility and accountability, even for the littler members of the team

  • Everyone in the family benefits, as the routine helps to promote flow leading to a calmer overall environment

  • It saves time (see all of the above)

  • The time saved allows more time for spontaneity

Routines may take a little bit of work to get them set up and put into motion, so be patient with the initial process. Everyone needs to be on the same page, and know exactly what is required of them. Once you’re up and running, it will become second nature within no time at all.

I recommend documenting your routine either in a diary or on a spreadsheet that you can print-off and refer to. It can be revisited when there is a change in circumstances or refreshed at least twice a year.

Make sure to allocate free time everyday and on the weekend so that you all still have room for choice in your life. No one wants to live like a robot. However, a sound routine is vital in helping you to reach your desired life goals as well as maintaining a more peaceful way of living.

If you need assistance to create a solid routine or support defining and implementing your life goals, Centred Soul Life Coaching can help you.
